Co-op Tarrazu were founded in 1960 and have almost 5,000 members, of which 33% are women. Over the last 15 years the number of producers has increased by 50% and the annual coffee production in 70%. The communities program has been running with Co-op Tarrazu since 2012, and was designed to help promote the individual characteristics of the coffee in ‘micro-zones’ of the Tarrazu region. The coffee of the Tarrazu region is one of the most recognized in Costa Rica and in the world and represents around 40% of the national production.
La Laguna is a small community of producing families who have an annual production capacity of around 50 bags, with all 35 producing families working together to do so. We are excited to have partnered up with the La Laguna community to buy their entire crop this year. Each of the producing families depend on coffee as a livelihood, and are committed to working together to ensure the coffee that is harvested is of excellent quality. The community focuses on producing high-quality washed coffee with a minimal environmental impact by using alternative washing methods to reduce the amount of water used in the process.
Currently, the Tarrazu co-op offer free seeds and soil analysis for members as a way of encouraging reforestation of the local area in order to be more sustainable in the long term. For the seasonal workers they offer free housing during harvest times, and festivals as a way of engaging and encouraging the continuation of their cultural heritage. By investing in the prosperity of its producers, the co-op aims to uplift their livelihoods and create sustainable economic opportunities within the community. Such efforts not only empower the coffee growers but also contribute to the overall growth and prosperity of the region.
